Does Workers' Compensation Cover Lost Wages?

At Steele and Ferguson, we stand ready to help you file your workers’ compensation claim and assist you throughout the process of obtaining benefits after an injury. We are aware that you may not be able to return to work for an extended period of time or even return to work at all, resulting in a loss of income, which is why we will help fight for you to receive the highest amount of compensation available.

Depending on your injuries, accident, and unique situation, you may be able to receive the following benefits:

  • Temporary total disability
  • Temporary partial disability
  • Permanent total disability
  • Permanent partial disability

In certain cases, you could be entitled to receive supplemental income or impairment income, and an attorney can help determine if you are eligible for either of those benefits.

How Much Does Workers' Comp Pay for Lost Wages in Michigan?

In Michigan, wage-loss benefits are calculated based on how much your work ability has been diminished, and how much you were making prior to your injury.

  • Unable to Work at All: For workers who are unable to return to work at all, your benefits will be calculated based on 80% of your pre-injury wages. However, depending on the year you were injured there will be a different maximum amount you are able to collect. For injuries that occurred in 2020, your maximum wage loss benefit is $934 per week.
  • Able to Work in a Limited Capacity: If you are able to continue working in a reduced capacity, you will be allowed to collect 80% of the difference between what you were taking home prior to your injury, and what you are currently earning. For example, if you were taking home $900 per week prior to your injury, but now you are only taking home $500, you will be able to collect 80% of the $400 you have lost ($320).
